1. OPENING OF THE SESSION


The FAO-WARDA Workshop on Integrated Irrigation Aquaculture was held in Bamako, Mali, from 4 to 7 November 2003. The Workshop was attended by 33 country participants from nine countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Chad), seven Resource Persons from the Inland Valley Consortium, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s Institute for Water Education (UNESCO-IHE), the International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management (WorldFish Center), l’Association pisciculture et développement rural en Afrique tropicale humide (APDRA), the Department for International Development (DFID), the Wageningen University Research Center (WUR), and the Sustainable Fisheries Livelihoods Programme (SFLP), Technical Secretariat (five) and support staff (five). The List of Participants is given as Appendix 1 to this Report.

The Workshop was opened by Mr Bernard Maïga, Technical Advisor of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries who welcomed the participants to Bamako in the name of the Government of Mali. Mme Mariam Mahamat Nour, FAO Representative and Mr Kouamé Miézan, WARDA Representative addressed the Workshop in the name of the Director-General of FAO, Mr Jacques Diouf, and the Director-General of WARDA, Mr K.F. Nwanze, respectively, and drew attention to the great importance of the multiple use of limited water resources and the development of integrated approaches for irrigation and aquaculture for the West African Region. The full text of the statements by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries and FAO Mali is reproduced in Appendix 2 and 3, respectively.

Mr M. Halwart (Fishery Resources Officer, Inland Water Resources and Aquaculture Service, FAO HQ) welcomed the participants on behalf of the Technical Secretariat of the Workshop and introduced the other four members: Mr J. Moehl (Regional Aquaculture Officer, FAO Accra), Ms I. Beernaerts (Technical Officer, Water Resources, Development and Management Service, FAO HQ), Ms C. Brugere (Fishery Planning Analyst, Fishery Development Planning Service, FAO HQ) and Mr P. Kiepe (Inland Valley Consortium Scientific Coordinator, WARDA).
