Cultivation of Fluvisols is generally governed by the depth, intensity and duration of flooding which occurs in the low-lying areas of these soils. These flooding attributes are generally controlled, not by the amount of ‘on site’ rainfall but by external factors such as river flood regime, hydrological features of catchment area and catchment-site relationship. Additionally, cultivation of these soils is normally confined to post flood periods, the crops being grown to a lesser or greater extent on moisture remaining in the soil. As a result of these factors, the anticipated yields according to length of growing period and the agro-climatic suitability classification (Tables 5.16–5.20) are not applicable to Fluvisols.

For Fluvisols, the agro-climatic suitability classification that has been considered to apply to conditions in Kenya is given in Tables 5.21,5.22, and 5.23 for low, intermediate and high levels of input respectively. For all crops in all thermal zones, areas of all lengths of growing periods greater than 270 days are agro-climatically classified as ‘not suitable’ because of excessive wetness/flooding.
