Code of practice and guidelines for safety with electric fishing.
EIFAC Occasional Paper. No. 24. Rome, FAO. 1991. 16p.

SUMMARY

The application of electric fishing is increasing rapidly indicating that it can be carried out in a safe manner with a minimum of risk to the participants, particularly if safe reliable equipment is used. Many jurisdictions in Europe and North America have been introducing electric fishing safety policies but there is a need for a common Code of Practice which reviews existing protocol and makes recommendations for inclusion in policy documents
For electric fishing to be carried out safely
i)The electric fishing apparatus must be designed and constructed so that it conforms with a standard set of national or local electric fishing safety guidelines and receives regular maintenance and inspections by qualified personnel certified to do so.
ii)Personnel involved in an electric fishing operation must are trained in the fundamentals of electricity, the correct procedures for operating electric fishing equipment, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and first aid.
iii)All electric fishing procedures and activities should be carried out under a standard set of safety guidelines as dictated by national and/or local regulations.
