What has the 'coconut leaf beetle' got to do with forests? Or conversely, is this a problem for forestry or agriculture? The division between the two sectors is non-existent, as demonstrated by this new pest ravaging coconut palms throughout the region. Simple and effective biological measures are available for this case, but it should go with additional measures such as farmers' education, appropriate policies, institutional support, and strong research backup. But the 'coconut leaf beetle' infestation points to a bigger problem. Invasive species are here, and would increasingly impact both agriculture and forestry. A regional approach is needed to contain the problem, which in all likelihood is going to grow bigger.
