ABSTRACT
Attainment of MDG-7 (environmental sustainability)
requires the realization of sustainable agriculture
systems. There is now inexorable pressure on world
agriculture to play a much wider range of roles than
ever before. While guaranteeing food security for
the global population and a source of livelihood
for billions of people, particularly the poor, it
must also provide sustainable ecosystem services
to the wider environment (supplying drinking water,
maintaining a stock of continuously evolving genetic
resources, preserving and regenerating soils, fixing
nitrogen and carbon, controlling floods, filtering
pollutants, pollinating crops and much more). |
