Rural Sector Note

ABSTRACT

Agricultural sector growth is important for a balanced and harmonious development of the Surinamese economy. It will have an impact on poverty, social and environmental issues and on a new vision of the rural areas as a space where there are opportunities for investment, employment, income generation and attractive living conditions comparable if not better than those of the towns. This report, prepared by the FAO Investment Centre in 2005, does not pretend to be a complete review of the many complex issues of the Surinamese agricultural economy. Its purpose was to update available knowledge on the sector and serve as a basis for further discussions between the Government and the World Bank on programmes and projects of mutual interest for follow-up.
