India reports approximately 40 000 ha of poplar plantations (1996 report, 26 400 ha).
Much of the wood, which is raised under agro-forestry systems by private farmers, is used for industrial purposes, with 60% of the plywood being manufactured from poplar.
Conservation strategies have been developed and germplasm collections have been made of P. ciliata, P. alba and P. euphratica. The last-named is being tested on moderately salt-affected soils.
Molecular techniques are being employed in studies of genetic variability and diversity.
