DURATION |
Two (2) Years |
LOCATION |
Terreferme-Bois Diable |
BENEFICIARIES |
C.F.I. |
BACKGROUND
One of the essential ingredients for maintenance of biological diversity in Dominica's wet tropical forest is the development of a sustainable forest industry. The implementation of this carries with it many difficulties. The terrain is rugged, wet and inaccessible. In the case of the Cottage Forest Industries (a corporation of small sawyers which aims to demonstrate the economic and ecological viability of a sustainable, community-based, labour-intensive, dispersed approach to timber utilisation in Dominica) extraction of forest products is becoming too strenuous and risky. Assistance is required for the building of a road to a site which is in the process of being leased to the corporation, by Government, for harvest and application of timber stand improvement techniques.
The members of the C.F.I, are the major suppliers of sawn lumber to the furniture manufacturers in Dominica. They provide employment for an estimated 300 predominantly rural people.
IMMEDIATE OBJECTIVES
(a) To alleviate the intensity of labour by improving the productivity of the small sawyers who are members of the C.F.I.
(b) To build a forest road at the proposed government allocated site at Terre Ferme, approximately 8 km long.
ACTIVITIES
(a) Prepare an Environmental Impact Assessment of area proposed for road.
(b) Conduct a survey of the proposed road.
(c) Build approximately 8 km of all-season road.
(d) Utilise wood products for lumber, charcoal, posts.
