COFI SUB-COMMITTEE ON FISH TRADE AS INTERNATIONAL COMMODITY BODY AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE COMMON FUND FOR COMMODITIES (CFC) (Item 9)

27. Some delegations expressed general appreciation of the projects financed by the CFC and their successful execution by the regional INFO services. The Sub-Committee approved the pipeline projects as outlined in Appendix 2 of document COFI:FT/VII/2000/10 and it was suggested that priority should be given to those dealing with training for HACCP activities. Delegates welcomed the re-establishment of INFOSAMAK in Morocco, which should permit the implementation of CFC projects in the Near-East.

28. Several delegations highlighted the continued need for technical assistance and training, especially in developing countries, and welcomed the use of CFC projects as well as assistance from developed countries in such areas.

29. The Secretariat informed the Sub-Committee on procedures and deadlines for submission of new project proposals to the CFC. The Secretariat also confirmed to the Sub-Committee that FAO is compensated by the CFC for all work on CFC projects, including field supervision, and that Regular Programme Funds were not used for this purpose.

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE FAO STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK - TRADE ASPECTS (Item 10)

30. The Sub-Committee expressed satisfaction with the adoption of the Strategic Framework and the emphasis on the use of institutional partnerships and cooperation with other international organizations. In this context, the Sub-Committee was informed by Denmark, which funds EASTFISH, that a Conference of Plenipotentiaries will be held in May 2000 to establish a new international organization EUROFISH.
