I would like to welcome you all to the SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department here in Tigbauan.

Tigbauan, as you have noted, is a small town. When you are with us here, you become a part of the Department. So whatever difficulties and problems you may have, are also ours. Please do not hesitate to call on us. Let us help you to make your stay here both memorable and comfortable. We are all here to learn and to share experiences with each other. We hope that when you learn from us you will find it, in one way or another, practical and useful.

Again… To All Participants… Welcome! Thank you.

ANNEX F
FEEDS FOR AQUATIC HATCHERIES1

by

Tirso Jamandre, Jr.2

The hatchery system is an artificial one, trying to stimulate natural conditions. It deals with the handling of eggs, young, delicate larval stages, -- in other words, babies.

It is then necessary to feed these “babies” so the feeds for them must be “custom-designed”:

  1. Nutrition-wise - to satisfy the nutritional requirements;

  2. Size-wise - to fit the mouths and digestive capacities of the “babies”;

  3. Acceptability-wise - in a form they can utilize. This includes consideration of digestibility, hence, thickness of cell wall must also be considered for phytoplankton.

It is also important to know the characteristics of the larval stages. In our limited experience in hatchery with Penaeus monodon, it is observed that when the fry start feeding (late nauplius, early protozoeal), it is not yet fully developed to recognize and chase its food. Feed should be supplied at concentrations that the larvae can just by opening its mouth, ingest enough of the food organisms to keep it from starving. Water movement must also be increased to increase contact between the animal to be fed and the food organism. Changes in larval stages usually indicate changes in feeding habits.

1 Keynote statement during the Opening Exercises of the Training Course, 3 April 1981, Tigbauan, Iloilo, Philippines

2 Private fish/agriculture farm operator and aquaculture engineer consultant, Iloilo City, Panay island, Philippines

Feeding practices I have observed to be most common in commercial hatcheries are:

  1. The introduction of live food - the food is grown in separate tanks, and is introduced into culture tanks at volumes believed to be ideal for the organism.

  2. Fertilization of culture tanks - diatoms or rotifers are cultured in the same tank as the larvae.

  3. Introduction of dead or processed feed - this theory is justified by its proponents in that these processed feeds do not give off metabolic wastes, hence, do not interfere with water quality.

  4. A combination of the preceeding three.

When feeding in any system, one must consider the related problems which are primarily, waste removal and water quality control. These are dealt with by engineering, by figuring out water exchange rates, recirculation, airlifts, biofilters, air systems, flow-through systems, and so on.

As the “babies” grow older, they can assimilate food with more complex proteins. Many commercial hatcheries still rely on Artemia salina, the brine shrimp, in the late stages of larval culture. However, the commodity is quite scarce and expensive.

It is, however, noted that P. monodon occurs naturally in Philippine waters. We cannot, therefore, escape the conclusion that they must be eating something found in the Philippine waters.

This, I believe, is the call of the day: to find suitable food organisms for our aquatic hatcheries that are available in our own respective areas. It is important that our food be complete, not only in quantity (number of units/ml), but also in quality.

OPENING REMARKS

by

H.R. Rabanal
(FAO)

Distinguished Guests, Staff of the Aquaculture Department of SEAFDEC, Fellow Participants and Friends:

Once again, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is very pleased to be able to hold this short practical training course on the “Growing of Food Organisms for Aquaculture Hatcheries”. It will be recalled that this came about when in 1978, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the major funding agency for economic development projects of the UN System, notified the existing projects of the various UN family of agencies concerned with agriculture, fisheries, and forestry, to submit plans for short-term training courses designed to stimulate the growing of food and cash crops. The FAO/UNDP South China Sea Fisheries Development and Coordinating Programme (SCSP), a regional project based in the Philippines, submitted five training course projects. Out of these, four were approved and funded for implementation from 1979 and onwards. We are happy to report that this Programme has so far implemented two of these courses, namely: (i) the Training Course on Freshwater Prawn Farming, held in Jepara, Central Java, Indonesia, Brackishwater Aquaculture Development Centre, September-October 1979; (ii) Training Course on Gracilaria Algae, held in Manila and Batangas province, Philippines, in April 1980 with the Marine Sciences Center of the University of the Philippines as host institution. The fourth course will be on Training of Fish Culture in Fishpens and Fishcages, to be held in the Philippines for fishpens and in Hong Kong for fishcages, in October-November this year. This, the third course on the Growing of Food Organisms for Aquaculture Hatcheries is fortunately being hosted by the Aquaculture Department of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) for the period 3–22 August this year.

The Programme sponsor of this training course is very grateful to the Aquaculture Department of SEAFDEC, the Chief, the Deputy Chief and the staff of this Department for giving this the implementing sponsor its fullhearted cooperation. The course is using the space and existing facilities of the Department as well as its accommodation facilities for the participants and external course staff. The Department personnel also will compose the main instructoral staff for the course and we are grateful to them for taking pains in making the necessary preparations to make this course worthwhile and practical.

Upon the suggestion of the Chief of the SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department, we are availing of the services of Dr. Rafael Guerrero III, young and noted aquaculturist in this region, to act as Technical Director of this course. Through him and the SEAFDEC staff, you will receive technical guidance through the course. I am also certain that during your short stay amidst the diversified facilities for aquaculture in this Department, you will be able to witness some of the other activities and facilities that are available here.

I would also like to note and I believe this is included in your programme that the University of the philippines Brackishwater Aquaculture Development Center (UPBAC) is just one hour ride from this campus, and it will likewise be profitable for you to see this Center during your stay in Iloilo.

I am also very glad to inform you that within this province of Iloilo, we can find a very dynamic group of aquaculture operators from the private sector. I am glad to say that we have invited

one of its outstanding members to keynote the opening of this course. I am sure you will have the opportunity to sample some of the private sector projects during your visit here.

The South China Sea Programme recognizes the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) and its agencies concerned as its counterpart in its work in the Philippines. I am very pleased to inform you that the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has been rendering very close cooperation to this Programme in its work in the Philippines as well as its work with the other participating countries. The Bureau is sending to this course participants as well as observers and we have found it expedient for a ranking officer of this agency to officially open this course today.

The South China Sea Programme wishes to welcome the participants and observers to this course who come from 12 countries from different parts of the world. We hope you will have a fruitful and pleasant stay in Iloilo and in the Philippines even for this very short period. We in the Programme and the deputed technical director and instructoral staff will be ready to listen to you and cater to your needs during your stay in the course. Mr. Vincentius Soesanto, the Fisheries Training Extension Officer of this Programme will be the overall coordinator to service this course. Dr. William Chan, Small-Scale Fisheries Adviser of the Programme will also be with you during part of the duration of the course. Therefore, do not hesitate to call upon these staff, not only for any problems that you may encounter but also for a mutual exchange of knowledge on various aquaculture subjects.

Thank you and good day!

Chornn Lim
Station Head
SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department Complex
Tigbauan, Iloilo, Philippines

Mr. Soesanto of the South China Sea Fisheries Development and Coordinating Programme, Dr. Guerrero III, Consultant of the SEAFDEC AQD and Coordinator of the Training Programme, my dear Colleagues and Friends in the Department and Participants in the Training Course on Growing Food Organisms for Fish Hatcheries, Good Morning:

I have been requested to give the closing remarks for this Training Programme. Therefore, I would like to give a short talk by extending to all of you my congratulations for a job well done.

Three weeks may seem a long time to be away from home, but considering the series of lectures, laboratory work and field trips that you had to go through, I am sure that the time seemed to be short for you. But despite of this, you came out best, showing diligence, determination, discipline and dedication.

We hope that you have gotten the best from this training. We all feel confident that you will find, in one way or another, the practical application and usefulness for the things you have learned during this training programme. The Department is proud to have graduated a batch of worthwhile trainees like you.

We deem that you have become a part of the Department during your short stay here and we hope that we have become a part of you, too, even in a small way. In behalf of the SEAFDEC AQD, I wish you good luck in your future work and bon voyage. I am sure that wherever you go to achieve, the Department will be proud of you.

Again, congratulations and thank you!
