P R E F A C E

The report on the appraisal of the Lampung Giant Fresh Water Shrimp Project is undertaken on the basis of Contract No. DP/INS/72/064-2/FI with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Its aim is the assessment of the various implications of the Lampung Giant Fresh Water Shrimp Project.

The project under study has a dual objective since its aim is not only the technical development of Giant Fresh Water Shrimp Culture but its feasibility within the framework of the present transmigration program. The study is thus directed to explore the requirements and possibilities of Giant Fresh Water Shrimp Culture as a non-paddy-field alternative engagement for transmigrants.

Within such a framework, the appraisal is thus directed not only at the technical and financial aspects of the project but more importantly the design of the organization to accommodate and the specification of marketing efforts to sustain the undertaking.

The presents study reflects the cooperative effort between the Directorate General of Fisheries and the Management Institute of the Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia, both in data gathering as well as analysis.
