There are certain basic criteria that have to be met for the development of aquaculture. These include water, land and a favourable economic climate for inputs and markets. Other factors that influence the pace of development are social welfare, availability of extension services, infrastructure and agglomeration.
In essence, the detailed criteria for fish farming development were specified, then data pertaining to these criteria were compiled, models that relate the criteria were formulated and analyses were made and reported as maps and tables.
The district, of which there are 110 (Fig. 1), is the unit used to portray the final results of analyses. Maps identify the districts most apt for development. Tabular data give the scores calculated for various criteria one at a time and together after they have been incorporated into models.
