GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF RESEARCH PROGRAMMES

Freshwater Aquaculture Research Station (FARS), Mymensingh

• Pond Production Section

  • Culture programme
    Research directed towards optimum production in existing ponds, including evaluation of management measures (seed, nutrients, protectants and physical factors) as well as identification of new culture systems (polycultures, integrated farming systems).
  • Technology programme
    Studies into improvement of existing techniques (such as water management, fry transportation, harvesting, silt removal) and into development of new techniques (such as pond aeration, snake control).
  • Product development programme
    Identification and evaluation of new opportunities, including alternatives for conventional culture (frogs, tilapia), additional products (pearls, minor carps, ornamental fish) and products from ponds unsuited for conventional culture (catfish).

  • Nutrition and diet testing programme
    Determination of nutritional requirements of fry, fingerlings and mono- and polycultural grow-out. Translation of these requirements into feed formulae to be met by the feed processing industry. Testing of processed supplementary and full diet feeds.

• Reproduction Section

  • Breeding procedures programme
    Studies to improve results of (semi-)artificial reproduction of fresh water fish, including feeding and handling of broodstock, induction of maturation and ripening, hypophysation techniques, handling of eggs and larvae, plankton management and other fry pre-development techniques. Research into (semi-)artificial reproduction of non-cyprinid species.
  • Hatchery technology programme
    Improvement of operational efficiency of hatcheries through adaptation of technologies and/or design. Development of small-scale (“backyard”) hatcheries.

  • Selective breeding programme
    Identification of favourable production characteristics in cultured species and improvement of broodstock by selection, inbreeding and hybridization.

• Pen/Cage Culture Section

  • Inventory of sites programme
    Survey and mapping of suitable sites for cages, pens and enclosures in rivers, floodplains and large freshwater bodies.
  • Production programme
    Studies of production systems in cages and pens, including species selection (in dependance of sites), management procedures (seeding, feeding, harvesting and monitoring of production) and “farm” development and protection.
  • Nursing programme
    Studies of predevelopment and stunting systems in cages and pens, including species selection (in dependence of demands) and management procedures.
  • Technology programme
    Development of cost-effective pens and cages of local available materials. Design of modular systems.

  • Nutrition and diet testing programme
    Determination of nutritional requirements of suggested cage or pen culture species through testing of existing natural, supplementary and full diet feeds. Translation of these requirements into feed formulae to be met by the feed processing industry. Testing of processed feed for growth, fish health and cost-effectiveness.

• Health Care Section

  • Diagnostics programme
    Survey and description of parasites and diseases (and their agents). Description of characteristic effects of non-biological agents (including common pollutants and toxicants) and nutritional deficiencies.

  • Treatments programme
    Evaluation and administration of drugs.

• Socio-economic Section

  • Social aspects programme
    Analysis of social constraints for production, including problems related to multi-ownership of waterbodies, non-observance of regulations, conflicts of interest with respect to rice/shrimp farming and poaching. Development of co-operatives.
  • Juridical aspects programme
    Provision of background data for rules and laws concerning leases of fishing rights, ownerships and fisheries regulations.
  • Financial and Economic aspects programme
    Feasibility studies concerning new culture systems and new products. Analysis of credit requirements, etc.

Brackish Water Aquaculture Research Station (BARS), Satkhira

• Culture Section

  • Penaeus monodon programme
    Research directed towards optimum production systems of P. monodon in mono- and polyculture, including evaluation of management measures (seed, nutrients, protectants and physical factors) as well as identification of new culture systems (shrimp/crops rotation, integrated farming systems). Studies into improvement of farm technology and design.
  • Macrobrachium rosenbergii programme
    Research directed towards optimum production systems of M. rosenbergii in mono- and polyculture, including evaluation of management measures (seed, nutrients, protectants and physical factors) as well as identification of new culture systems (shrimps cum rice, integrated farming systems). Studies into improvement of farm technology and design.
  • Brackish water product development programme
    Identification and evaluation of new opportunities, including fish (mullets, milkfish, catfish), other Penaeus and Macrobrachium species, crayfish, crabs and artemia.

  • Nutrition and diet testing programme
    Determination of nutritional requirements of shrimps and analysis of growth limitations in (semi-) natural food supply. Translation of these limitations into formulae for supplementary feeds. Testing of processed supplementary feeds (including waterstability). Development of complete diet feeds for (post-) larvae as an alternative for cultured feed.

• Resources Section

  • Macrobrachium survey programme
    Survey of natural stocks and recruitment of Macrobrachium species. Mapping of breeding, spawning and nursing sites and their relative importance. Studies of natural reproduction cycles and of larva population dynamics.
  • Penaeus survey programme
    Survey of natural recruitment of Penaeus species and analysis of factors that determine recruitment. Mapping of spawning and nursing sites and of gateways to sea and their relative importance. Studies of natural reproduction cycles.

  • Site analysis programme
    Establishment of relation between soil and water chemistry and brackish water production potential. Analysis of availability and suitability of sites for brackish water aquaculture.

• Reproduction Section

  • Breeding procedures programme
    Research into (semi-)artificial reproduction of shrimps and brackish water fish, including feeding and handling of broodstock, (backgrounds of) induction of maturation and ripening, stimulation techniques, handling of eggs and larvae, and predevelopment techniques.

  • Hatchery technology programme
    Development of efficient hatchery techniques (with emphasis on Macrobrachium rosenbergii) through adaptation of existing technologies and/or designs. Development of small-scale (“backyard”) hatcheries.

• Health Care Section

  • Diagnostics programme
    Survey and description of parasites and diseases (and their agents) of shrimps and brackish water fish. Description of characteristic effects of non-biological agents (including sub-lethal toxicology of commonly used rice pesticides) and nutritional deficiencies.
  • Treatments programme
    Evaluation and administration of drugs. Identification of safe rice pesticides.

Riverine Fisheries Research Station (RFRS), Chandpur

• Riverine Fisheries Section

  • Production management programme
    Stock assessment of anadromous (Hilsa) and riverine fish. Development of fisheries regulations on the basis of collected data on stocks, recruitment and catch and effort. Adaptive gear development.
  • Riverine ecology programme
    Survey of reproduction areas, natural breeding cycles, broodstock and fry/larvae of anadromous (hilsa) and riverine (mainly Indian major carps) fish. Analysis of recruitment.

  • Environmental aspects programme
    Studies of the impact of changes in the environment (including industrial and agricultural pollution, changes in hydrological systems and regimes and changes in fishing systems and pressure) on recruitment and growth of riverine and anadromous fish. Studies of consequences of changes in the riverine environment on estuarine and coastal zone ecology.

• Large Waterbodies Section

  • Production management programme (mainly to be carried out at Oxbow lakes & Kaptai project sites)
    Studies of the limnology of lakes; determination of constraints for fish production. Development of management measures, including stocking (size, species), selective predator control, weed control and harvesting schedules (fishery regulations); stock and recapture analysis.

Marine Fisheries and Mariculture Research Station (MFRS), Cox's Bazar

• Mariculture Section

  • Marine fish cage and pen culture programme
    Survey and mapping of suitable sites for marine pens and cages. Cage/Pen technology. Selection of species (including Lates calcarifer) and determination of culture procedures.
  • Mollusc culture programme
    Survey and mapping of suitable sites for culture of molluscs, including oysters, mussels, cockles and clams. Identification and on-site studies of spat collection and farming systems. Studies of growth potential in dependence of prevailing nutrient availability.
  • Marine product development programme
    Identification and evaluation of new opportunities for mariculture.

  • Nutrition and diet testing programme
    Determination of nutritional requirements of marine fish species to be cultured in pens/cages. Testing of available waste products in fresh and processed form on their suitability to meet the requirements.

• Marine Fisheries Section

  • Marine production management programme
    Stock assessment of commercially important marine species, including detailed analysis of pelagic fisheries resources in the Exclusive Economic Zone. Development of fisheries regulations, based on collected data on stocks, recruitment and catch and effort, and directed towards acceptable income distribution among fishermen. Adaptive gear development.
  • Marine ecology programme
    Survey of reproduction areas, natural breeding cycles, broodstock and fry/larvae of the commercially important marine species. Analysis of recruitment success. Plantkton surveys.
  • Marine product development programme
    Identification and survey of non-used marine resources (including trawler by-catch, sharks, rays) and their potential values.

Fisheries Technology Research Station (FTRS), Chittagong

• Feed Technology Section

  • Feed technology programme
    Survey of availability and composition of fish feeds and premies on the international market; inventory of quality and quantity of local ingredients for feed production. Development of processing technology for various formulations of larva feeds, supplementary feeds, and full diet feeds. Translation of feed formulae into experimental or commercial diet formulations, using as many local waste products as possible. Development of standardized quality control of ingredients and of nutrient profile analysis of processed feeds. Development of feed application technology for cages, ponds and open waters.

• Processing Section

  • Quality aspects programme
    Development of standardised sampling and analysis methodology for quality determination of raw materials, ice and processed products, keeping up with international demands and including tests on bacterial contamination, and enzymatic degradation. Development of hygienicsimproving methodologies.

  • Processing technology programme
    Adaptations of modern processing technology and development of new technology to the specific requirements for fishery products in Bangladesh. Upgrading of unused (waste recycling) and low-value resources into commercial products. Development of hygienic transportation technology for raw materials.

• Marketing Section

  • Marketing programme
    Studies of consumer preference in fishery products. Research to improve quality towards consumer preference. Market studies for new products.

TASK DESCRIPTIONS OF TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PERSONNEL

I INTERNATIONAL PERSONNEL

A Detailed Planning Consultants

(A1) Research Programme Planning Specialist

1. Assist the management of NIFR in the detailed planning of the organisation of NIFR, see 55 (A3).
2. Assist the management of NIFR in preparing and adjusting detailed work schedules, including overall network planning.
3. Monitor and evaluate progress made.
4. Further detail Terms of Reference for national and international consultants.
5. Take final responsibility for all reporting leading to a Research Master Plan.

A2 Farming Systems Specialist

1. Assist the management of NIFR in establishing detailed plans of operation for the 5 research stations, see 55 (B1, C2, D1, E1, F2).
2. Advice with respect to, co-ordinate and supervise the planning and design of BARS, Satkhira and RFRS, Chandpur.
3. Assist the management of NIFR in developing the Planning and Monitoring Section of the Programme Division (Figure 2).
