1 GENERAL INTRODUCTION

(01) By Ordinance No XLV of 1984, entitled “The Fisheries Research Institute Ordinance, 1984”, the President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh created the Fisheries Research Institute on 11th July, 1984. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) are providing technical assistance to the People's Republic of Bangladesh to set up the Fisheries Research Institute (FRI).

(02) Analysis of the present fisheries situation in the country revealed that main emphasis should be given to research in riverine fisheries, brackishwater aquaculture, and fisheries in ponds and other freshwater bodies (see TA-reports 1 and 2 in this series).

(03) This present TA-report 5 embodies the research plan for the Brackishwater Fisheries Research Station (BFRS), proposed to be set up in the Khulna region. In this research plan special emphasis has been given to the development of technologies for shrimp culture which is expected to be the main component in brackishwater aquaculture in Bangladesh.

(04) For development of the research plan the services were hired of dr. A. N. Ghosh, shrimp specialist. He worked on the plan during 5 weeks within the period March - May 1986, in co-operation with the Soil specialist (dr. M Karim), the Aquaculture engineer (dr. J. Muir), and the teamleader (dr. H. van Zon).
