2. SCOPE OF PRESENT REPORT

There are three reservoirs (Mangla, Tarbela and Hub) where new hatchery-nursery pond units are recommended. These reservoirs have been in operation since the late 60s. Environmental conditions have changed and new fish fauna is still developing. By permitting the stocking of suitable fish species, it is considered that the new units should improve the utilization of the reservoirs.

The limnological characteristics and biological productivities of the reservoirs are still under investigation. However, there is some information to define the basic requirements of the new units.

At Mangla and Tarbela reservoirs, hatcheries already exist, but their utilization is far below the required level. These need improvement in both technical and management aspects. These points were the main subjects of the consultant's first visit, and are discussed in Working Document 2 of the present project.

The findings of the second visit concerning the designs of the new complexes are presented in Working Document 8. Design details are presented in the annexes of the present report.
