1. INTRODUCTION AND TERMS OF REFERENCE

The Government of the Syrian Arab Republic, assisted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations through the Technical Cooperation Programme, is engaged in a project whose main purpose is to improve the national fish production generally, and in particular to increase present aquaculture production and make recommendations on fisheries management.

As part of the project operation, FAO assigned Mr P. Bronzi as consultant in aquaculture (general production) from 10 May to 18 June 1982 with the following terms of reference:

Together with the engineer consultant, the consultant will make a general survey of freshwater fish culture in Syria which will involve:

  1. visiting the state farms (5), mostly producing carp, grass carp and tilapia in polyculture;

  2. visiting a representative number of private farms engaged in the same type of polyculture;

  3. visiting representative trout farms.

In each farm, he will assess the major problems actually impairing fish productions such as lack of fry, quality/quantity feeds, definite water quality, diseases and bad stock management. On these bases, he will make specific recommendations for the improvement of fish production.

Taking into account the nature of these recommendations, together with the potential for future development of inland fish culture at the national level, the consultant will prepare a proposal for a UNDP/FAO technical assistance project in his field of specialization, but in close collaboration with the other members of the consulting team.

The consultant's itinerary is attached as Appendix 1, and Figure 1 is a map showing the location of the fish-farms.
