1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 TERMS OF REFERENCE

The Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has requested the assistance of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to assess the fishery development potential of a diversity of inland waters, and to identify the major lines of development and management related research work needed to enhance the fishery development in the country.

FAO assigned Mr. T.Petr, Fishery Resources Officer, as consultant for the period 16 June to 9 July 1987. The consultant's visit had three major components: (i) discussions with the Iranian fisheries officials on the current inland fish stocks and fisheries, including some aspects of the Caspian Sea; (ii) two field trips - one to the northern provinces of Gilan and Mazandaran, and one to the southern provinces of Khuzestan and Fars: (iii) drafting of two project proposals which were discussed with the government authorities and the UNDP office in Tehran.

This report is based on information collected during the Mission and on some additional data obtained from literature.

For the Travel Itinerary and Persons Met. see Annexes 1 and 2.
