APPOINTMENT OF DIRECTOR-GENERAL
(Note by the Secretary-General of the Conference and Council)

1. In accordance with Rule XXXVI-1 (a) of the General Rules of the Organization, the Council at its Hundred and Twenty-seventh Session (November 2004) decided “that nominations to the office of Director-General should be communicated to the Secretary-General of the Conference at the latest by 8 April 2005 at 12.00 hours, and that such nominations should be circulated by the Secretary-General to all Member Nations of the Organization by 29 April 2005.” (CL 127/REP, para 105).

2. By the date set by the Council, the Secretary-General of the Conference and Council had received one nomination. The nomination and the curriculum vitae of the nominee are appended as follows:

Mr Secretary General,

You will recall that at its Hundred and Twenty-seventh Session held in Rome from 22 to 27 November 2004, the Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) decided, in accordance with the provisions of Rule XXXVI.1(a) of the General Rules of the Organization, that nominations for the post of Director-General of FAO should be communicated to you by 8 April 2005.

In accordance with Rule XII.5 of the General Rules, I should like by means of this letter and on behalf of the Republic of Senegal to submit the nomination of Dr Jacques DIOUF for re-election to the post of Director-General of FAO.

Attached is the curriculum vitae of Mr DIOUF in French and English.

I should like finally to indicate that at its Third Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa in July 2004, the Conference of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union decided to nominate Dr Jacques DIOUF as Africa’s sole candidate for the post of Director-General of FAO.
