ASSISTANT SECRETARY-GENERAL: The results of the Ballot for the Asian Region for the period November 1993 to 31 December 1996 are as follows:

Sergio A. BARRERA (Philippines): We would like to congratulate Malaysia on having been elected to the Council in place of the Philippines, whose term will be ending. In accordance with Rule XXII-l0(g) GRO, which states that the candidates who are unsuccessful in filling vacancies occurring in the first calendar year shall be included among the candidates for election to the vacancies occurring at the end of the second calendar year, except where they voluntarily withdraw, the Philippines would like to announce that it is voluntarily withdrawing and does not desire to be included in the next balloting.

Abdul Basit HAQQANI (Pakistan): I would like to say on behalf of my delegation that we will also not be contesting the next round of balloting.

CHAIRMAN: With this situation, there are now six countries left for the next ballot, voting for six seats. Since they have to obtain a required number of votes to qualify, although through their graciousness the distinguished delegates of the Philippines and Pakistan have withdrawn, we still have to vote again.

ASSISTANT SECRETARY-GENERAL: This is the report of the Ballot for the election of Council Members for the Asian Region for the period of 1 January 1995 to November 1997.

CHAIRMAN: We have now come to the end of the proceedings on this item, the election of Council Members. I congratulate all those Members who have been elected to the Council, and I also appreciate the graciousness of the Members who voluntarily withdrew from the contest in order to make it easier and quicker.

With this I conclude this 17th Plenary Meeting.
