INFORMATION NOTE

VENUE AND DATES

1. At the kind invitation of the Government of Australia, the Eighteenth session of the Asia-Pacific Forestry Commission will be held at the Noosa Lakes Resort on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia, from 15 to 19 May 2000. The opening session will start at 09.00 hours on Monday, 15 May 2000, and the session is scheduled to close by noon on Friday, 19 May 2000.

2. Noosa is on the sub-tropical Sunshine Coast, one hour drive north of Brisbane. It is unquestionably one of Australia's most scenic and beautiful regions. Noosa is situated against a backdrop of green-forested mountains and hillsides, sloping down to a coastline of glittering beaches. It is one of Australia's most enticing holiday and conference destinations.

ENROLMENT AND INFORMATION

3. Participants are requested to complete the enclosed enrolment form and return one to each of the addressees listed thereon as soon as possible.

4. Registration of participants will take place at the Noosa Lakes Resort from 08.00 to 09.00 hours on Monday, 15 May.

DOCUMENTATION

5. The session will be conducted in English, and also in French if necessary. As far as possible, documents will be made available in advance to delegations, which should bring them to the session as only a limited number of extra copies will be available during the session.

CLIMATE

6. The climate in Noosa in May is warm, with temperatures ranging from 11° to 24°. The rainfall average for this time of year is approximately 119 mm. Lightweight clothing is recommended, with maybe something a bit warmer for the evenings. Formal wear is required for the opening and closing functions.

CURRENCY

7. The monetary unit of Australia is the dollar (AUS$). Currency is issued in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar notes. Coins are issued in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50 cents and 1 and 2 dollars. As of mid-February, the exchange rate was approximately 1 AUS dollar = .63 US cents. All major credit cards and travellers cheques are readily accepted in Australia.

FORMALITIES FOR ENTRY INTO AUSTRALIA

8. Passports must be valid from the time that the visa is issued to the time of return. Please check with your nearest Australian Mission as to whether a visa is required for entry into Australia. An application will need to be presented to your nearest Australian Mission at least two weeks prior to travel.

ARRIVAL DETAILS

9. Noosa can be reached through either Brisbane International Airport or the local domestic airport at Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast. Flights into Maroochydore are available daily from Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane airports.

10. Participants arriving at the Brisbane International Airport will be met by members of the organizing committee if flight details are included on the enrolment form. Transport will be provided from the Brisbane airport to the conference resort.

ACCOMMODATION

11. Early return of enrolment form will help facilitate hotel bookings. Participants are encouraged to stay at the Noosa Lakes Resort being the venue for the session. Rates are as follows:

12. Rooms are apartment style and have a kitchenette. There is also a supermarket very close. Participants may wish to make breakfast in their rooms.

EXCURSION

13. A one-day field excursion is being organized on Thursday, 18 May 2000. The excursion will require a moderate amount of easy walking. Please bring suitable clothing, including comfortable walking shoes.

EXHIBITS AND PUBLICATIONS

14. Delegates are encouraged to bring posters, publications, reports, etc. related to forestry activities in their country, including materials describing successful forestry projects and programmes. Areas will be available for displaying exhibits, posters and other materials. An evening programme of presentations on successful initiatives will be organized if interest exists. If delegates anticipate needing special support for displays, exhibits or presentations, please advise Mrs Tracey Reed, at the contact point listed on the enrolment form.
