THIRTEENTH SESSION
(Lusaka, Zambia, 22-24 March 2000)

INFORMATION NOTE


VENUE AND DATE

1. At the kind invitation of the Government of Zambia, the thirteenth session of the AFWC Working Party on Wildlife Management and National Parks will be held from 22 to 24 March 2000, at the Chisamba Safari Lodge Game Ranch Resort (approximately 30 minutes from Lusaka), followed by the twelfth session of the African Forestry and Wildlife Commission from 27 to 30 March 2000, at the International Conference Centre in Lusaka, Zambia. Their respective opening sessions will begin at 10.00 hours on Wednesday 22 March and Monday 27 March 2000.

ENROLMENT AND REGISTRATION

2. Participants are requested to complete the attached enrolment form and to send one copy to each of the addresses indicated as soon as possible. Registration for the sessions will take place at the respective meeting sites from 09.00 to 10.00 hours on 22 and 27 March, respectively.

DOCUMENTATION

3. Documents will be made available to participants in English and in French and will, as far as possible, be sent to delegates in advance of the sessions. Delegates are asked to bring with them the documentation received as only a limited number of copies will be available during the sessions.

CLIMATE/CLOTHING

4. Zambia is endowed with humid tropical climate tempered by altitude, and vegetation dominated by wooded savannah and open forest ecosystems. Another feature of Zambia's climate is a long rainy season from October to May (about 150 mm rainfall in March), followed by a short dry season from June to September. The capital, Lusaka, has annual temperatures around 20� C during March-April.

5. Light suits are recommended in March, with light raincoat/jacket for outdoors. Cotton clothes are recommended, as well as strong shoes for excursions.

FORMALITIES FOR ENTRY INTO ZAMBIA

VISA

6. Participants holding passports of most SADC and Commonwealth countries, as well as those travelling with United Nations Laissez-Passer may not need to apply for an entry visa.

7. Those who need a visa should apply at the Zambian Embassy in their country of residence, or at the nearest one.

8. The AFWC Liaison Officer may help obtain a visa upon arrival at Lusaka International Airport, on condition that passport details are sent at least 3 weeks before arrival .

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS

9. A vaccination certificate may be requested at the entry point in Zambia, in particular for yellow fever and smallpox.

FLIGHT CONNECTIONS

10. Zambia is well connected with most Eastern and Southern African International Airports. Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, South African Airlines, Zimbabwe Airlines, have regular flights from/to Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Harare. All major European Airlines connect directly to Lusaka.

11. Members of the Organising Committee will meet delegates at Lusaka International Airport and take them to their hotels.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE

12. Most convertible currencies may be brought to Zambia, but big amounts must be declared on entry. The current (November 1999) exchange rate is Zambian Kwacha, ZMK 2,500 to US$1.

13. Most hotels accept major credit cards (American Express, Visa, Master Card).

STUDY TOURS AND EXCURSIONS

15. The following optional tours are envisaged between the two sessions, on 25-26 March 2000:

16. Transport will be granted by the Host Country; however, delegates may be requested to provide a contribution to accommodation and meal arrangements.

ACCOMMODATION

17. Accommodation has been arranged at Inter Continental, Pamodzi Hotel, Holiday Inn and different hotels at the Centre of Lusaka, at rates ranging from US$ 70.00 to US$ 95.00 per night, including breakfast. Some Guest Houses and smaller hotels offer accommodation, including breakfast, at US$ 27 to 35 per night.

TRANSPORT

18. Transportation will be provided daily at 08.00 hours from hotels to meetings, and at 17.00 hours from meetings to hotels.

19. Lunch is arranged at the International Conference Centre at US$ 12.00, but those who wish to have their meal elsewhere are free to do so. Please note however, that no transportation is provided at lunch time.
