Fibreboard

Total regional consumption of fibreboard in 1992 was nearly 4 million m3, or 24% of the world's total (Table 50). The region's world share has gained substantially from 9% in 1962 to 24% in 1992. The top three consumers are China (1.8 million m3), Japan (1.1) and the Republic of Korea (418 thousand m3). Consumption has grown fast in all three countries during the 1980s, in parallel with their economic developments. Thailand's consumption also experienced a fast growth since the late 1980s.

Prior to 1980, most countries had been self-sufficient in fibreboard, and production had risen with consumption. During the 1980s and early 1990s, however, improving economic conditions accelerated the demand for fibreboard (Table 51). In response to consumption, production of fibreboard in the Asia-Pacific increased significantly and reached 3.6 million m3 in 1992, double the 1982's level. In China, production increased from 707 thousand m3 in 1982 to 1.5 million m3 in 1992, while consumption rose from 707 thousand to 1.8 million m3. In Japan and the Republic of Korea, production also grew substantially over the same period.

As shown in Tables 52 and 53, there was very little trade in fibreboard in the region until the mid-1980s. Total imports/exports had been less than 100 thousand m3 during that time, accounting for around 3% of the world imports/exports. By 1992, imports had jumped to 722 thousand m3 while exports increased to 583 thousand m3. The region's world shares of imports and exports increased also. China led all countries in imports with 295 thousand m3, about 17% of the country's total consumption. Other major importers include Japan with 155 thousand m3 and Australia with 95 thousand. For exports, New Zealand was the most important supplier in the region, with 360 thousand m3 exported in 1992. That is about 68% of the country's total production.

Table 54 illustrates the direction of trade in fibreboard within the region and with other parts of the world, based on UN statistics. It suggests that Indonesia also exported fibreboard, though FAO's Yearbook did not show such data. Almost all of New Zealand's exports were to the countries within the region, more than 52% of the region's imports were from other regions, mostly from the United States.
