china's civilization has been recognized as the oldest in the world. One of its major artifacts is the YANG-SHAO KANSU (GANSU) neolethic pottery which dates back to as early as 4700 B.C. Although Gansu is cited as the first site where these artifacts were found, succeeding finds indicate that they were abundantly available in all parts of northwest China.

Among the ten provinces where the "Women Population and Development" programme is operating, seven of these provinces are the cites of these historical pieces.

Pottery was and still is women's basic tool for storage and decoration, especially in the rural areas.

In this Manual we have drawn inspiration from these artifacts and took liberties as we used them in folk art as tools to express our ideas.
