WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION

(Arthur David Parkinson)

The World Health Organization (WHO) has an involvement in the intersectoral projects related to "Healthy Cities" and "Healthy Islands".

Both of these themes have considerable environmental health components related to ways in which changes to the environment affect the health of the people living in these situations. It is WHO's charter to work together with countries and various agencies and organizations to ensure that people's health is protected or enhanced by environmental change and also to make changes to improve the quality of life where environmental changes have already affected health in a negative manner.

WHO also has distinct programmes in environmental health, water, sanitation and chemical pollution. It is involved in nutrition and food safety and food security and provides collaborative support to many countries in these fields of activity.
