An outbreak of African swine
fever was confirmed in Botswana in June 1999. The diagnosis was on a clinical
and a laboratory basis.
The initial detection of this outbreak was made on 4 June 1999 with an estimated date of first infection being 31 May 1999.
Diagnosis. Pigs were dying in large numbers, showing inappetence, recumbency and nervous signs.
Epidemiology. The origin of the infection seemed to be related to pigs that had broken through the fence and mixed with warthogs. There is no adjacent pig farm.
The control measures consist mainly in the restriction of the movement of pigs into and out of the affected property.
