PROJECT TITLE

Establishment of Handicraft and Furniture Workshop and Handicraft Plantation

LOCATION

Carib Territory

DURATION

Five (5) years

BENEFICIARIES

General public and Forestry Division

BACKGROUND

Over the years the production of furniture and other related handicraft products in Dominica has been very limited, which has resulted in the retardation of such an economically viable industry. This has been attributed to a lack of skills and raw materials which are available in other tropical countries. As a result, handicraft furniture and other related products are being imported. Handicrafts are being made in the Carib Territory and other scattered areas but with little variety and poor quality. Furniture is being made mainly from lumber products. Importation of skills and raw materials from other countries is being suggested for the survival and expansion of this industry. This project therefore, sees the need to build an institution to house a workshop in which imported skilled workers can share some of their inherited skills with Dominicans. Another area this project emphasizes is the growing of both imported and locally available plants needed for this industry.

A considerable quantity of products which include furniture, fencing, scaffolding and screens can be produced for both local and export markets. Technical advice for such a project can be obtained from countries such as Haiti and the Philippines which are well ahead in such an industry. Revenue and employment will be among the many benefits from such a project.
