Synopsis (short abstract) This policy brief summarizes the findings from a global survey on the impacts of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak on wood value chains and recovery measures from the forest sector. The survey received responses from 237 stakeholders registered in the Sustainable Wood for a Sustainable World (SW4SW) network, representing all segments of wood value chains. The survey was administered for two weeks (3–15 June 2020) and the results presented here cover impacts during the reference period of February to June 2020. Based on the survey results, initial policy recommendations are formulated for current challenges and future perspectives involving wood value chains in the post-COVID-19 environment.

Ce document d’orientation reprend les conclusions d’une enquête réalisée à l’échelle mondiale concernant les impacts de la flambée de maladie à coronavirus (covid-19) sur les chaînes de valeur du bois et les mesures de riposte issues du secteur forestier. L’enquête s’appuie sur les réponses reçues de 237 parties prenantes membres du réseau de l’initiative «Du bois durable pour un monde durable» (SW4SW, d’après «Sustainable Wood for a Sustainable World»)1, représentant tous les segments des filières du bois. L’enquête a été menée sur une durée de deux semaines (3-15 juin 2020) et les résultats présentés ici reflètent les impacts observés au cours de la période de référence, allant de février à juin 2020. Sur la base des résultats de cette étude, des recommandations initiales en matière de politiques ont été formulées et sont présentées ici, au regard des enjeux actuels et des perspectives futures des chaînes de valeur du bois dans l’environnement post-covid-19.

This document summarizes the online discussion Responding to the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on food value chains through efficient logistics held on the FAO Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition (FSN Forum) from 4 June to 6 July 2020. The discussion was facilitated by Marco V. Sánchez, Deputy Director of the Agrifood Economics Division of FAO. This online discussion invited participants to share how the measures aimed at curbing the COVID-19 pandemic have impacted the logistics of food value chains in their respective countries. Participants discussed which measures have been put in place regarding value chains, and how the post-pandemic phase is being approached. Some contributors also shared observations and ideas on logistics and value chain dynamics in the context of the COVID-19 crisis more broadly.

On 8 March 2020, the Philippine government declared the State of Public Health Emergency to address the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). On 13 March 2020, the Government imposed enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) over Luzon. Subsequently, similar measures were imposed throughout the country, including in Mindanao, and especially in Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). Although the COVID-19 epidemic is primarily a public health concern, the necessary measures enacted to contain the spread of the virus, especially the restrictions placed on the movement of people and goods, were likely to have a significant impact on all levels of the agricultural market chain. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) decided to conduct a rapid assessment on the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on food security and nutrition. The results of the impact assessment was envisioned to inform key government agencies in identifying the appropriate measures and programs that will ultimately help ensure food security for all, at all times.
