    Malnutrition is pervasive in both low- and middle-income countries. Yet, there is a scarcity of food intake data collected at the individual level to describe diets, determine the prevalence of inadequate nutrient consumption in populations, and shed light on how diets contribute to the malnutrition burden. In the absence of nationally representative individual-level food intake surveys, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, dietary data collected in household consumption and expenditure surveys (HCES) are being used as a second-best option to make inferences on the food and nutrient consumption of populations. This paper proposes an innovative approach to estimate variability in nutrient intake that uses food data collected in HCES to estimate the prevalence of nutrient inadequacy in a country. This method builds on the approach developed by FAO to estimate the indicator of inequality used in the Prevalence of Undernourishment used in the global monitoring of food insecurity.

    The Asia-Pacific region, despite impressive economic growth in recent decades, is home to 490 million people still suffering from chronic hunger, accounting for 62 percent of undernourished people in the world. Stunting of children remains a serious challenge, with the prevalence over 40 percent in several countries. Micronutrient deficiencies are still a major problem in many countries. The trend of childhood obesity is increasing, and the region has about 17 million children under five years of age who are overweight. Thus, the Asia-Pacific region currently is affected by a triple burden of undernourishment, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity. However, ending poverty and hunger by 2030 is feasible. Together with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP), FAO is committed to achieving Zero Hunger in the context of Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2) to eliminate hunger and all forms of malnutrition by 2030. As almost 80 percent of the extreme poor live in rural areas, it is therefore necessary to transform the rural economy and to empower small-scale and family farmers as critical agents of change in order to achieve Zero Hunger. This document describes the background to, the objectives of and the agenda for the Ministerial Round Table, held on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 in Nadi, Fiji at APRC 34.

    As African countries race against time to end hunger by 2030, improved country data is critical in tracking progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goals 2 on zero hunger, nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. The indicators used to monitor progress towards achievement of SDG 2 is the Prevalence of Undernourishment (PoU) and the Prevalence of moderate and severe food insecurity based on the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES). However, the quality of data produced by countries that is necessary to produce these indicators has historically been limited. Through the FAO implemented project, the capacity of benefiting countries to capacities to collect, analyze and monitor data on food and nutrition security using standardized tools has improved. Reports on Food and Nutrition Security have been produced using the FAO methodologies and tools.
