    The purpose of this bulletin is to introduce beekeepers, people considering keeping bees and those interested in processing and marketing to the large diversity of products that can be derived from beekeeping for income generation. Each product category, including cosmetics, derived from basic bee products such as honey, pollen, wax, propolis, royal jelly, venom, adult and larval honeybees, is presented in this publication, providing history, description, product quality, marketing aspects, and a few selected recipes. A detailed bibliography, a list of suppliers of equipment, conversion of weights and Codex Alimentarius Standards for Honey are given in the Annexes.

    Beekeeping (or apiculture) refers to raising the colonies of honey is hives. Honey, wax, pollen, propolis, bee milk and poisons are the most valuable foods and unique raw materials for human health, medicine and pharmaceutical industry. Another important function of beekeeping is to assist in pollination of cross-pollinated crops. Bees are also raised for selling them to individuals interested in beekeeping.

    Les abeilles pourraient assurer un moyen d’existence ou de revenu pour beaucoup d’apiculteurs à travers le monde. Ceci pourrait se faire à travers les services offerts par les abeilles (principalement les services de pollinisation, l’apithérapie et l’apitourisme), ou directement à travers les produits de la ruche. Ces derniers incluent: les abeilles vivantes afin d’assurer la disponibilité de nouvelles reines ou essaims à tout moment, le miel, le pollen, la cire, la propolis, la gelée royale, et le venin d’abeilles. Les produits de la ruche peuvent être utilisés comme aliment pour les hommes, aliments pour les animaux, cosmétiques, médicaments dans la médecine conventionnelle (principalement vaccins), ou dans l’apithérapie, ou comme ingrédient dans des produits de menuiserie, d’appât, comme édulcorant, etc.
