Description:

Almost 70 participants from 17 countries in Asia participated in a regional consultation on safe street foods organized by the World Health Organization, Regional Office for South-East Asia (WHO SEAR), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (FAO RAP) and the Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University (INMU) convened in Bangkok, Thailand from 20 to 23 June 2011. The overall objective of the consultation was to promote safe street foods in Asia, including adding to the existing knowledge on street foods and developing a roadmap to promote safe street foods in each country. The meeting noted some recent work, including the regional consultation on safe street foods jointly organized by WHO SEAR and FAO RAP (Bangkok from 20-23 June 2011), which recommended development of a Code of Practice for street food vendors in Asia. Also noteworthy was the work carried out by FAO in Bangladesh to strengthen food safety in street foods for which Good Hygienic Practice training material and hygienic street food carts were developed. This report provides information about the definition, content, regulation and monitoring aspects as well as the overall principles and practices of safe street foods in Asian countries. The report also includes national roadmaps for strengthening/promoting safe street foods in Asia as identified by the countries.
