Exercise 1: Experience capitalization

Exercise 1: Experience capitalization

For the first exercise each participant is requested to submit a short experience on the use of drones. You can share your own experience or the experience from an organization or project of your choice. In case you are writing about an experience that is not yours ensure to clearly mention the sources you have used. We are looking for short texts of 300 to 500 words, replying to the following questions:

  1. Describe for what purpose the drones were used and in which context?
  2. What challenges were faced using the drones?
  3. What lessons can be drawn from this experience?
  4. Additional resources (list links to additional information on the experience if available).

Submit your exercise by Monday the 23rd of October by commenting on this page. To be able to comment you need to be logged in. On Monday the 23rd of October, participants, experts and facilitators will go through the submissions and offer comments or ask questions.

Thank you for submitting your experiences! Don't forget to come back to the page on Monday to discuss and ask questions.

For those who are wondering why sometimes it takes some time before your comment appears, this is because we moderate the forum and approve comments before they are published.

Hope to read more experiences on this page over the weekend!

Greetings to All,

I have no experience with drones but very interested in the technology because of the possibilities. The questions that are posted would help me to do research to further build my knowledge base and develop a project.

Hello,

I have not had any experience with Drones in Agriculture, but i have experience in monitoring of marine mammals and obtention of orthomosaic in coral reefs; these products are used for the characterization of the submerged landscape at low scale.

the challenges faced were to adjust an appropriate methodology for the implementation of photogrammetry in an aquatic environment.

the salvage of this project is the feasibility in the implementation of drones to obtain data of quick response and at a low cost (compared to data obtained from other remote sensors)

Hello there,

I have been away on work trips town. Just got access to internet today and can see am way behind. Just saw the first excecise and did not want to miss out and fortunately the submission deadline is today. Hope I can catch up with the rest soon.

My experience with drones. I have never interacted with a drone before but I have watched alot of youtube videos about drones and diffrent types and uses. A friend of mine who works with and agricultural firm attended a training on drones in Uganda recently and came back and shared how cool drones were. They were using a 3DR Solo and their purpose was for close range mapping in order to collect farm information or spatial data for GIS experts.

I am particularly interested in two aspects of drone technology application. In Geospatial survey of compartments and maaping in forestry and in photography. I want to gain hands on Knowledge of drone operation and explore the potential it has in improving production and at the same time cutting costs.

My friend who has experienced drone use had a challenge in syncing one of the mapping applications I think Agisoft, am not so sure with a DJI drone they had hired. They also were anticipating to capture pictures in the mapping process for an ordinary farmer in the rural community to be able to interpret but the images were lidar format. Here in my country there is no clear regulation on the use of drones hence you fly and go figure it out incase you get into trouble. But soon we will have some clearly stated rules. It is also expensive to acquire a drone as an individual.

Lessons learned from my watching of youtube videos and from my friend who has had an experience with drones are numerous. First the opportunities in drone tech are endless. We have learnt that acquiring knowledge on operation and application is the best approach to take with or without one.

Thank you for sharing!

If you would like to know more about drones and forestry, check out the content of last Friday: http://www.e-agriculture.org/forumtopics/friday-20-october-use-drones-fo...

I see a lot of people face a problem with analyzing and interpreting the images they have captured. This is something we will discuss also in the webinar on Tuesday 24 October at 2 PM UTC - 4 PM CEST - For more information: http://www.e-agriculture.org/news/e-agriculture-learning-activity-drones...

The use of drones in agriculture is alien to most researchers and farmers in Nigeria. I have no personal experience in this innovation. I know from literature search on the topic that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority already has a legislation governing use of unmanned aircrafts. For me its a challenge that we should quickly ammend our curriculum to capture this subjects to enable us be at par with the rest of the world. My area is animal nutrition and I wish to be further informed to what extent drone technology has been deployed in this field.

I don' t have experience in use of drones. I'd like to introduce the use of UAV as a tool for livestock management in the Sustainable cattle ranch in Colombia . In the course and other materials about drones find the following uses: 1. Inventory, identification and tracking animals. 2. Livestock health and reproduction ( heat detector). Pastures , and sylvopastoril monitoring. 3. Surveillance. 4. Soil, water and field analysis. 5. Biodiversity and trees monitoring. 6. Mapping and division for pasture yards. 7. Verified life and electric fences. 8 moving cattle. I hope in the future adopt and implement this technology and share the experience with you!. Thank you very much for your attention. Rwanda has got a drone policy; which means if you want to use drones for diferent purpose you have to have a permission. I missed 2 chances of assisting to the use of drones : 1st time , I was working with reporters from deutsche welle to produce a short story on Rugezi wetland lacated in Nothern Rwanda. The second time , my organization in partenership with Conservatiion International were carring out a study on ecosystems within Nyabugogo  watershed in Rwanda. From that time, I realeased that drones are important in agriculture related fields. Before, I used to think that drones are only for military purposes. But in Rwanda, we are also using them for helath purpose---to transport bloods to different hospitals. It's really amazing.
