Digital Technologies for Resilience Workshop (Tech4Resilience) in review
Digital Technologies for Resilience was the theme of a workshop organized by FHI 360 in Bangkok with funding and support from Rockefeller Foundation and USAID.
The workshop intended to create a space and exchange mat for professionals who are using digital technologies to enhance resilience. The other objective was to help participants to scale up the digital technology for resilience efforts. “The workshop enabled actual collaboration… several actual project collaborations took place –with exchanging of MoUs and project proposals” noted one participant.
The programme in retrospect
The two day programme focused on the showcase of technology, discussions, presentations and networking events.
On the first day, the digital technology providers who participated include, Cadasta Foundation, Field Ready, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT), PetaBencana.id, SweetSense, aWhere, Medic Mobile, and Nepal Flying Labs.
Commenting about the providers offering at the workshop, Valentine Gandhi said,“the Tech people invited and who presented their technology, did not think that they were superior to everyone else, because they had a cool technology or a shiny gadget…..but rather they were humbly enough to have realized themselves….that it was ... a service of human beings and not the other way around”. Participants also had an opportunity to participate in the idea creation sessions where they worked in groups using human-centered design tools to design prototypes that solves a specific challenge.
On the second day, idea sessions continued and there was a presentation of the RABIT: the Resilience Assessment Benchmarking and Impact Toolkit. The toolkit allows for the measurement of the impact on resilience of digital technologies, among other things. Lean more here.

Summary This presentation provides for the scale up of digital technologies for resilence in Asia. It defines the concept of resilence and provides the four phases. In Asia, there are various types of digital technologies used, for example Mobile App (46), Websites (25), GIS/Geospatial Satellite (38), SMS (20), Sensors (25), Social Media (10), IVR (16), Big Data (18), UAV/Drones (5), Data visualization (6), AI/Machine learning (4), IoT(8) etc. The presentation focused on how support can be done for the scale of digital technologies for resilience. Summary It has been discovered that agricultural information services have contributed to an increase in smallholder productivity and income up to 53%. Data allows for global insight data, and also access to climate specific data which can be infused with localized agronomic data. Data driven agronomy supports planting, weeding, pesticide, fungicide, nitrogen, irrigation and other localized practices. |
