What is EX-ACT?
FAO’s EX-ACT (EX-ante Appraisal Carbon-balance) is a scoping tool that aims at providing ex-ante measurements of the impact of agriculture and forestry development projects on GHG emissions and C sequestration, indicating its effects on the Carbon-balance.
Applying EX-ACT
The EX-ACT team applied the tool to various country projects (Congo DRC, Ethiopia, Morocco, Niger, Rwanda, Uganda) to evaluate the carbon balance of aggregated agriculture sector strategies and policy options. The studies estimate the impact of each project’s activities on greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration demonstrating that the recommended agricultural practices can be twofold with respect to climate change: actions aiming at improving resilience to climate change (adaptation) and actions that have a beneficial impact on carbon sequestration (mitigation), while supporting rural development.
