Capacity development

Evidence-based decision making, at both national and international level, requires high-quality data, computed according to recognized standards to ensure accuracy and transparency in international reporting. To this end, internationally accepted guidelines and international data repositories may provide a solid basis for collecting, analyzing and disseminating data, including for international reporting. Robust statistics are the foundation to demonstrate progress against specific national and international goals, set through domestic policy and international regulations.

The FAO Environmental Statistics team of the Statistics Division (ESS ENV) supports FAO member countries in the development of core agri-environmental statistics, including statistics on land use and land cover, on inputs for production such as water, fertilizers and pesticides, and on environmental impacts, such as air emissions statistics. Part of this support is implemented through the process of data collection, analysis and dissemination via FAOSTAT, through continuous interactions between FAO and country staff. In addition, the ESS ENV team leads the development and country implementation of statistical international methodologies and standards in support of national and international analysis and reporting, such as for instance the need for joint environmental economic analysis under the System of Environmental Economic Accounting (SEEA); the development of agri-environmental indicators including in support of the SDG process; and climate-change relevant information in support of reporting under the climate convention.
