Agri-Environmental Indicators (AEI) are key tools to monitor the environmental performance of agriculture, track trends in environmental impacts, and provide information to assess the effects of the integration of agri-environmental concerns into policy measures.
The new FAOSTAT database on agri-environmental indicators is key to the sustainability of food security and is used for data analysis, and identifying trends and interactions between agriculture and the environment.
The FAO Agri-environmental dataset currently includes 24 indicators under eight domains:
- Air & Climate Change
- Energy (use in agriculture and bio-energy production)
- Fertilizers Consumption
- Land (area, use-change, irrigation, conservation, cropping patterns, organic, protection)
- Livestock density
- Pesticide use
- Soil (erosion, degradation and carbon)
- Water use
The coverage of the dataset coverage includes all FAO members, depending on data availability. The indicators have been developed in collaboration with The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Eurostat Agri-Environmental frameworks and are based primarily on data available in FAO.
GHG emissions from agriculture
As countries become more accountable for reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions there is increased demand for data and information. One need is for the annual inventories of GHG emissions and removals related to agriculture, which countries submit to the United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The data required present a unique challenge to inventory compilers, especially from developing countries, because of the lack of national data and technical capacity to monitor, collect and analyse relevant information.
FAO has developed a global inventory on greenhouse gas emissions from all agriculture sectors, in cooperation with the Natural Resources Department. The default IPCC/UNFCCC Tier 1 methodology is applied to derive estimates of GHG emissions associated with each activity, which is a key deliverable of the Monitoring and Assessment of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Mitigation Potential in Agriculture (MAGHG) Project, funded by Germany and Norway and part of the Natural Resources Mitigation of Climate Change in Agriculture Programme (MICCA) at FAO. The dataset is based on input data from FAOSTAT and the Forest Resource Assessment (FRA) data on agriculture and land-use change activities officially reported by countries.
FAO Statistics carries out regular collection and dissemination of statistics on land use; production, trade and use of fertilizers; production and consumption for major pesticides groups (insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, plant growth regulators and rodenticides) and seed treatments.
