Description
Launched an initiative aimed at formulating an EU-wide strategy for the promotion of protein rich crops, notably soybean.
Notes
As a first phase in the formulation of a strategy for promoting protein-rich crops (in particular soybeans) across the EU, the European Commission has sought the views of industry experts and other stakeholders on the sectors state of play. The initiative stems from concerns over the blocs heavy reliance on soybean imports as well as growing consumer preference for non-GMO food and feed (see also MPPU July & Aug.17). Among other things, the Commission wishes to assess the effectiveness of policy instruments such as voluntary coupled support, i.e. the possibility of linking direct farmer support payments to the production of protein crops.
