Eve Crowley, FAO Deputy Director for Gender, Equity and Rural Employment, talks about the first global study on child labour issues relating to livestock. In this short interview, Ms Crowley explains some of the risks faced by children working with livestock and outlines ways to address the problem, including policy work and awareness raising at the community level.

Agricultural cooperatives are key to food security. They are unique enterprises, embodying a business model that has economic as well as social aims. The FAO Director-General has highlighted his strong commitment to the goals and priorities of the International Year of Cooperatives (IYC) and encouraging governments to establish favorable policies, legal frameworks and participatory processes in which agricultural and food cooperatives as well as producer organizations can develop and become strong, gender equitable and efficient enterprises. Countries must do more to fight family based child labour in agriculture -- The Government of Cambodia has taken some concrete steps and changed its fisheries policies.

In an effort to raise awareness on the contribution of agricultural cooperatives to food security and poverty alleviation -- FAO, the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) -- took part in the official launch of The International Year of Cooperatives (IYC) 2012 at UN headquarters in New York on 31 October 2011. The three Rome-based agencies also discussed the links between food security and the cooperative business model at a jointly organized side event entitled: "Agricultural cooperatives: a means to achieving food security".

The crucial role of women in food production was the focus of this ECOSOC Global Preparatory Meeting entitled: "Who Feeds the World in 2010 and Beyond? - Rural women as Agents of Change and Champions of Global Food Security".
