FAO and INEC join forces to promote dissemination and use of agricultural data

FAO is working together with the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) of Ecuador to implement the AGRISurvey programme with the aim of strengthening the country’s agricultural statistical system and improving data dissemination and use.

This activity is directly linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) and seeks to support countries to have updated information and facilitate the decisions making for the design of public policies and the fulfillment of international commitments that guarantee food security.

Through AGRISurvey, Ecuador is producing more and better data that will help policy makers to have evidence-based information that can support more effective policies and better monitoring of SDGs indicators, namely 2.3.1 (Productivity of small-scale food producers) and 2.3.2 (Income of small-scale food producers). In this line, FAO delivered a training course aimed at showing different approaches for data uses in agricultural policy analysis.

This three-day training workshop, titled “Análisis de Política Agrícola usando microdatos”, took place at the end of August 2019 in Quito, and was attended by technical staff from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, and from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses. The training presented different methodologies that can be used to undertake agricultural policy analysis based on microdata and included practical sessions that permitted the trainees to understand the analysis of microdata applied to different agricultural policy simulations.

The collaboration between FAO and Ecuador, in the context of the AGRISurvey programme, will continue with the implementation of a national agricultural survey using the AGRISurvey methodology, in the coming months. In addition, subsequent support to agricultural policy analysis is foreseen to take place towards the end of this year.
