Food security

FAO's twin-track approach for fighting hunger combines sustainable agricultural and rural development with targeted programmes for improving direct access to food.

The first track addresses measures for establishing resilient food systems. Factors affecting system resilience include structure of the food economy and components such as:

  • agricultural production
  • technology
  • diversification of food processing
  • markets
  • consumption

The second track assesses options for providing support to vulnerable groups, with analysis providing insight into food security dynamics and calling for attention to risk and options for managing it.

Food security and vulnerability analysis

Identification of who the food insecure are, where they live and why they are food insecure is key for preparedness and effective response to food and agriculture emergencies.

FAO programmes are involved in the collection, analysis and dissemination of information related to food insecurity and vulnerability, for better-targeted interventions:

The Food Insecurity and Vulnerability Information and Mapping Systems Initiative (FIVIMS)

FIVIMS promotes better understanding of characteristics and causes of food insecurity and vulnerability. FIVIMS also contributes to policy formulation, targeting and monitoring interventions to reduce hunger.

EC-FAO's Programme on Information for Action

Funded by the EC, the Information for Action programme focuses on enhancing national capacity to use food security information for more effective anti-hunger policies and programmes.
