To improve Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) education, communication and disease surveillance; establish a laboratory; draft animal health legislation; improve pig and poultry health and production; and research HPAI and other emerging infectious diseases.

Beneficiaries reached:

MAP (particularly the National Directorate of Livestock and Veterinary Services) benefited from various capacity building trainings, and improved capacity on animal disease diagnosis, prevention and control.

Activities implemented:
  • Developed animal disease surveillance and passive reporting system in Timor-Leste.
  • Created national and district animal investigation teams in 13 districts equipped with essential equipment and relevant trainings.
  • Developed a vaccination strategy for classical swine fever, including the operational budget and technical support of its implementation in the field.
  • Established and equipped a diagnostic veterinary laboratory.
  • Timor-Leste now has the human assets, technical knowledge and facilities to undertake active and passive disease surveillance for HPAI and other important diseases.
  • The project improved public awareness for early detection and reporting of HPAI and other emerging infectious diseases.
  • Training provided by the project has significantly improved the MAF’s veterinary service capacities.
