Objective:

To improve staple crop production, protect livestock assets and increase vegetable production for household consumption and income generation.

Key partners:

Sudan Ministry of Agriculture; Abyei Secretariat of Agriculture Animal Resources; Abyei Community Agency for Development; and National Development Agency.

Beneficiaries reached:

2 655 vulnerable households.

Activities implemented:
  •  Distribution of 34 tonnes of crop seeds to 1 000 households.
  •  Veterinary services provided to 11 800 animals (vaccination and/or treatment).
  •  Training of community animal health workers to provide veterinary services.
  •  Training for 30 farmers in homestead animal husbandry for family nutrition and animal health services.
Impact:
  •  1 674.9 hectares of land cultivated for field crops.
  •  677.9 tonnes of crops yielded, including maize, cowpea, sesame and peanuts.
  •  Improved the overall food security in the project area and assisted the beneficiaries in becoming less dependent on food aid.
  •  Reduction in mortality rates and disease outbreaks of livestock.
  •  Improved health of livestock has led to more protein and increased income for 1 655 households.
