Objective:

To improve the predictability, timeliness and effectiveness of responses to humanitarian and early recovery needs in 2010-2011 by strengthening the capacity of the existing cluster coordination mechanisms.

Key partners:

The World Food Programme, Afghanaid, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock.

Beneficiaries reached:

Government ministries, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), United Nations agencies and donors, as well as people requiring emergency food assistance and farmers and livestock herders in need of emergency agriculture assistance.

Activities implemented:
  •  Establishment of the Food Security and Agriculture Cluster (FSAC) Coordination Team.
  •  Regular monitoring of key food security indicators.
  •  Development of strategies and action plans.
  •  Provided capacity building of FSAC partners through regular meetings and training sessions on information management systems, humanitarian contingency planning, disaster relief and recovery, livelihood zoning, monitoring and vulnerability assessments.
Impact:
  •  Strengthened efficiency and effectiveness of the FSAC, FSAC partners and the cluster system.
  •  Enhanced food security information management and dissemination.
  •  Increased accountability and partnership within the cluster and needsbased support to FSAC partners.
  •  Increased participation in all aspects of the cluster, positive feedback on specific cluster support activities, noting substantial improvement in the quality and quantity of activities.
