Objective:

To support vulnerable farming families affected by high food prices and the drought crisis through the provision of quality wheat seed and fertilizer for the autumn 2009 and spring 2010 planting seasons in Uruzgan and Daikundi provinces.

Key partners:

The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, Provincial Governors’ Offices, Provincial Departments of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, Provincial Development Committees, District Development Assemblies, Community Development Committees, local shuras, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Beneficiaries reached:

17 364 households (approximately 121 548 individuals).

Activities implemented:
  • Procured and distributed 875 tonnes of certified wheat seed, 875 tonnes of di-ammonium phosphate fertilizer and 875 tonnes of urea fertilizer to 17 364 farming families.
  • Supported nine community-based micro-projects (veterinary clinics, sheep distribution and protection walls) using the funds collected from beneficiaries as part of the project’s partial cost recovery.
  • Provided a series of training programmes that aimed to strengthen the skills of beneficiaries and extension workers from Government institutes and partner NGOs, through technical advice and practical training.
Impact:
  • The seeds and fertilizers distributed by the project enabled crop production of approximately 3.8 tonnes of wheat per ha – a 43 percent increase as compared with local varieties.
  • The project increased local capacity in land preparation, proper sowing time, seeding rate, depth of seed, fertilizer application ratio, irrigation, weeding, rouging, harvesting and storage.
