Objective:

To enhance income generation for IDPs and returnees by improving staple crop production, protecting livestock assets and increasing vegetable production for household consumption.

Key partners:

Sudan Ministry of Agriculture; Blue Nile State Ministry of Agriculture Animal Resources and Fisheries; Samaritan’s Purse; Islamic Relief Fund; and Adventist Development and Relief Agency.

Beneficiaries reached:

4 576 returnees

Activities implemented:
  • Distribution of 34 tonnes of crop seeds and 480 kg of vegetable seeds.
  • Treatment of 45 000 livestock affected by common endemic diseases.
  • Training of community animal health workers to provide veterinary services in 20 villages.
  • Distribution of basic fishery inputs and training in safe fish preservation techniques for 35 returnees.
Impact:
  • 2 361 hectares of land cultivated for field crops and 49.8 hectares for vegetable crops.
  • 556.3 tonnes of crops yielded and 493.9 tonnes of assorted vegetables harvested.
  • Reduced mortality and morbidity rates in livestock through vaccination and curative services.
  • Improved the overall food security in the project area and assisted the beneficiaries in becoming less dependent on food aid.
