Objective:

To contribute to strengthening wildlife farming biosecurity and management to ensure food safety, food security and improved livelihoods in Viet Nam.

Key partners:

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species Management Authority of the Viet Nam Forest Administration Office (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development).

Beneficiaries reached:

Staff from Provincial Forestry Protection Departments (PFPD).

Activities implemented:
  • Organized three technical trainings on conducting data census surveys on wildlife farms for 88 staff from 12 PFPDs.
  • Conducted 1.5-day trainings for provincial staff on data collection, including instruction, data collection instruments, data support tools, data collection management, data entry and data reporting.
  • Developed biosecurity assessment tools and guidelines for conducting wildlife farm surveys, with a focus on risks associated with disease transmission from animals to humans and food safety.
  • Conducted a pilot wildlife farm census survey in 12 provinces, during which data was collected from 1 554 488 animals on a total of 6 006 farms.
  • Developed a database on Microsoft Excel for information collected from the wildlife farming census surveys.
  • Organized a wildlife farming workshop in Ho Chi Minh city on 6 February 2015 to share the results of the baseline survey and obtain feedback from forestry officers on challenges or benefits associated with its implementation.
Impact:
  • Strengthened the capacity of provincial staff to collect data from wildlife farms and conduct wildlife farming census surveys.
  • Contributed to the enhanced collection, reporting and management of data related to wildlife farming.
  • Improved the Government’s understanding of the current state of wildlife farming in Viet Nam.
