Objective:

To contribute to strengthen the food security and resilience of the populations affected by floods in the five prefectures.

Key partners:

The Direction nationale de l’agriculture, the Direction préfectorale de l’agriculture, the Ministry of Agriculture and Non-governmental Organizations.

Beneficiaries reached:

11 000 vulnerable households.

Activities implemented:
  • Procured 140 tonnes of rice seeds, 50 tonnes of maize seeds, 400 tonnes of fertilizer and 200 tonnes of urea for crop production.
  • Procured 150 kg of eggplant seeds, 300 kg of okra seeds, 75 kg of onion seeds, 37.5 kg of tomato seeds, 3 000 hoes, 3 000 machetes and 3 000 watering cans for vegetable production.
  • Distributed one of two types of crop kits (kit 1: 35 kg of rice seeds, 50 kg of fertilizer and 25 kg of urea; kit 2: 12.5 kg of maize seeds, 50 kg of fertilizer and 25 kg of urea) to 8 000 households (5 872 men and 2 128 women) in 17 sites of the five prefectures identified by the project.
  • Distributed one of two types of vegetable kits (kit 1: 50 g of eggplant seeds, 100 g of okra seeds, 25 g of tomato seeds, one hoe, one machete and one watering can; kit 2: 50 g of eggplant seeds, 100 g of okra seeds, 50 g of onion seeds, one hoe, one machete and one watering can) to 3 000 households (917 men and 2 083 women) in 16 sites of the five prefectures.
  • Provided training on crop production, specifically focusing on: (i) disaster risk management and reduction; (ii) sustainable management of natural resources; and (iii) technical itinerary of rice and maize as well as post harvest techniques.
  • Provided training on vegetable production, specifically focusing on: (i) the agronomic characteristics of the Roma tomato variety, black beauty eggplant variety, kaaly okra variety and violet de Galmy onion variety; (ii) nursery preparation for vegetable production; (iii) planting and maintenance techniques; (iv) plant pests and diseases; and (v) establishing plots, and harvesting and processing techniques.
Impact:
  • Cultivated 2 000 ha of land and produced 4 800.05 tonnes of rice.
  • Cultivated 2 000 ha of land and produced 4 213.6 tonnes of maize. 
  • Cultivated 494.12 ha of land and produced 10 141.24 tonnes of vegetables.
  • Trained a total of 3 413 beneficiaries, of which 899 women.
  • Contributed to increase the food security and income of the beneficiaries through improved marketing techniques and diet diversification.
