Objective:

To increase income and reduce food insecurity through private sector-led growth.

Key partners:

The Ministry of Livestock in Somaliland, the Ministry of Livestock and Animal Husbandry in Puntland, Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Germany, as well as the University of Nairobi, the Africa Institute for Strategic Services and Development, Puntland United Livestock Professionals Association and Somaliland Livestock Slaughter Development Association.

Beneficiaries reached:

Meat sector stakeholders in Somalia, including 135 000 individuals who benefited from Meat Inspection and Control Act and the quality assessment system (QAS); 80 households from meat value addition skills development; 1 250 households from direct capacity building activities; and 270 000 individuals from awareness raising activities.

Activities implemented:
  • Put in place a Meat Inspection and Control Act, a Meat Hygiene Code and QAS, as well as established ten meat hygiene units in Somaliland and Puntland.
  • Trained 2 096 veterinarians, meat inspectors, butchers, slautherhouse workers and meat vendors on meat hygiene and handling practices, meat inspection procedures, waste management, livestock disease surveillance, and meat retail and marketing.
  • Carried out a behavioural change communication programme to enable a broad acceptance of the regulated meat sector across Somalia.
  • Supported two regional veterinary laboratories in Hargesia and Galkayo to better diagnosis and detect adverse trends in bacterial numbers. 
  • Carried out a mission to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates to identify opportunities to export Somali meat that conforms to quality standards.
  • Developed domestic meat marketing and labelling strategies.
  • Supported three women’s groups through the provision of training and equipment to set up micro-enterprises for soap production from animal fat, mug mad production and bone craft.
Impact:
  • Built the capacity of public and private sector institutions on regulating the Somali meat sector and providing consumer protection, which has led to better quality meat in local markets, the prevention of food-borne diseases and increased trust in the quality of inspected meat.
  • Identified business opportunities in Somali meat exportation, and boosted the local economy through the production of by- and core-livestock products.
  • Diversified project beneficiaries’ sources of income and created new employment opportunities.
