Objective:
To contribute to poverty reduction through the protection of livestock assets, thereby ensuring food and income security support to cattle owners in the smallholder sector.
Key partners:
The Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanization and Irrigation Development, and the Non-governmental Organizations Africare, Christian Care, Netherlands Development Organisation, Sustainable Agriculture Trust and World Vision.
Beneficiaries reached:
21 653 livestock-dependent households directly benefited from the provision of subsidized stock feed; an average of 7 050 households from borehole rehabilitation; and 11 843 livestock owners from extension support.
Activities implemented:
- Provided 18 991 tonnes of subsidized stock feed, of which 12 560 tonnes was survival feed and 6 431 tonnes was pen fattening meal.
- Procured material to construct 18 community feedlots.
- Established public-private community partnerships to help form input and output market linkages among feedlotters and abattoirs.
- Rehabilitated 94 boreholes and constructed water-holding troughs.
- Supported 38 village pump minders and ten builders through the provision of training.
- Procured 1 577 300 doses of foot and mouth disease (FMD) vaccine and 345 000 doses of anthrax vaccine, and provided them to the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Services (DLVS) to conduct vaccination campaigns in the project and surrounding areas.
- Trained 126 DLVS field extension officers on various aspects of animal health and husbandry management, the
- Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards, and animal disease surveillance.
Impact:
- Increased or maintained the livestock body weight of 49 067 heads of cattle through the provision of subsidized stock feed.
- Raised over USD 2.1 million through the sale of stock feed; the funds raised supported community livestock-related development projects.
- Improved access to clean water for both human and livestock consumption.
- Increased the value of cattle – ranging from USD 500 to 600 per animal – as well as improved the disposal value of livestock, thus increasing farmers’ income.
- Empowered farmers through better contract negotiating skills with input and output suppliers.
- Built the capacity of beneficiary livestock owners through improved extension support.
- Reduced livestock production losses associated with FMD and anthrax.
