Objective:

To contribute to the food security and income generation of small-scale farmers by implementing local food purchase initiatives for school feeding that complement the work already being done by the World Food Programme (WFP) through the Purchase for Progress Programme (P4P).

Key partners:

FAO Representations, WFP, national ministries of agriculture and education, the New Partnership for Africa’s Development.

Beneficiaries reached:

5 516 smallholder farmers and 128 456 pupils.

Activities implemented:
  • Procured haricot red beans, legumes, maize, millet and rice from local smallholder farmers in Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, the Niger and Senegal to be used in school meals.
  • Built the capacities of stakeholders involved in procurement and school feeding operations.
  • Supported the capacity-building of storing, handling and serving of locally sourced food at the school level.
Impact:
  • Ensured agricultural inputs and training support to 5 516 smallholder farmers.
  • Increased average productivity by 114.5 percent and guaranteed the sale of 37 percent of the total food produced by the supported farmers.
  • Complemented the school meals of 128 456 pupils in 420 schools with 1 025 tonnes of locally procured food.
  • Contributed to the programming and implementation of sustainable local food procurement initiatives, particularly for school feeding.
