Objective:
To increase access to food and enhance the resilience of vulnerable households in order to mitigate the impacts of the 2011‒2012 Sahel crisis.
Key partners:
The Convergence d’actions pour l’environnement et la santé (CAES).
Beneficiaries reached:
3 000 vulnerable households (18 000 people).
Activities implemented:
- Put in place a commission in each of the two communes (Koula and Teneni) and village committees to identify project beneficiaries.
- Distributed agricultural inputs, including: 1 422 kg of seeds (cabbage, cucumber, lettuce, okra, onion and tomato), 13 800 kg of fertilizer (Urea and NPK), 18 605 tools (forks, various types of hoes, rakes, shovels, watering cans and wheelbarrow) and fencing material (10 m3 of gravel, 80 m of rolls of wire and 160 m of rolls of wire mesh, 30 bags of cement and 886 angular bars).
- Carried out training focusing on: (i) good market gardening production techniques; (ii) composting and vegetable and fruit preservation techniques; and (iii) the management and exploitation of farmer perimeters.
- Implemented a number of activities in addition to those planned, including: (i) the provision of advisory support for the production of other vegetable varieties; (ii) the set up of a well in a collective site in the commune of Koula; (iii) the production of organic pesticides locally; and (iv) awareness-raising among beneficiaries on good nutritional practices.
Impact:
- Cultivated a total land area of 80 ha and obtained a total production of 1 637.5 tonnes of vegetables with an estimated value of FCFA 495 600 000 (about USD 991 200).
- Trained and reinforced the capacities of a total of 407 people.
- Contributed to increase the availability of and access to agriculture production and income thanks to the quality of the inputs provided to the beneficiaries in collaboration with CAES.
